While preparing the students for Marine Industry through extensively covered theoretical classes, practical engineering education at the in-campus workshop, out-of-campus Shipyard & Shipboard training, the curriculum ensures sufficient exposure to Electronic, Computer & Information technologies.
 

 1.  Eligibility
      Unmarried (male/female) Indian Citizens. Limited foreign nationals may be admitted with approval of Ministry of Shipping, Govt. of India.

   2. Age
      Maximum: 20 years old on 1st October in the year of admission.
      SC/ST: relaxable by 5 years

   3. Academic Qualification
      As per requirement of IIT-JEE. (Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Examination)

   4. Seat Reservation
      15% for SC, 7.5% for ST & 27% for OBC subject to availability. Certification necessary.

   5. Mode of Selection
         1. Qualify in IIT-JEE Examination.
         2. Application to Indian Institute of Maritime Studies (IIMS), Mumbai.
         3. Counseling of the selected candidates (Tentatively Last week of July/ First week of August).

About the College

Marine Engineering & Research Institute was established at the onset of Independence in 1947 to satisfy the growing need of marine engineers in India. The Institution earlier named as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training had its headquarter in Calcutta and a branch at Mumbai, under Ministry of Shipping (Government of India). The Institute has been renamed Marine Engineering and Research Institute in 1994.

The Institute was a dream project of a new India as she was expanding her horizon in the maritime field, starting with an initial intake of 60 cadets, today about 300 young highly motivated Engineers are passing through her hallowed portals.

After 50 years since her inception Marine Engineering and Research Institute is regarded as the most acclaimed Marine Institute around the world. Starting off as a four year-training course, today, MERI's students receive a Degree in Marine Engineering, duly approved by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education). The Institution takes immense pride in her alumni who at present apart from being regarded as one of the finest Marine Engineers around the globe, presently manning Shipping world over. She is also satisfying the present need of STCW-95 Convention of IMO and on the threshold of gaining recognition of ISO-9001. Dear Santosh,

The minimum eligibility for courses in nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness.
Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field.

Ans : dear u can undergo GEC course to get converted to marine engineer. The GEC course is for the duration of around 15 months and the entire training is completed in 3 phases as under: Phase 1: 5 months Pre-Sea training at Academy in Bangkok Phase 2: 8 months Sea training on board Ship. (You shall be paid a stipend of around USD 200 – 400 per month depending on the Ship. (The Institute assures 100/% Placements for sea training on board ships which is a pre - requisite to get the job with the Shipping Companies.) Ans : yes u can get it removed by laser operation n then u can apply COC3 course at IIMS ,Karnataka after 10+2 provides you with the stipend paid on board ship training paying 20000-25000 / month. after which students get placed at salaries ranging from Rs. 1.5- 2 lacs a month. Time period of course is 2 years( approx.) including 12-18 months of stipend paid training.Students of PCM / Commerce with Maths are eligible for one module whereas students of all three streams ARTS/SCIENCE/COMMERCE are eligible for another module .
