Mar Athanasios College for Advanced Studies- Tiruvalla (MACFAST), Kerala, India, a post graduate and research institution, was started in 2001, with the objective of offering specially designed courses in Business Management, Information Technology and Biosciences. MACFAST is owned and managed by the Corporate Educational Agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Tiruvalla, with His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Koorilos as the President and Patron. In the past 76 years this agency has contributed to the establishment of a large number of schools, colleges, hospitals, medical and paramedical institutions throughout the country.

MACFAST strives to raise its students to meet the challenging demands of the Corporate and Scientific world. In such a mission, research pursuits and technology initiatives gain significance. This had led to the recent establishment of the MACFAST Centre for Research and Development (MCRD). The MCRD offers PhD programmes in the Biosciences and is poised to enhance student creativity and produce high quality research.

A research journal titled Journal of Science, Technology and Management (JSTM), has also been initiated in 2008. JSTM is dedicated to bring together research in these three fields from around the world and also publish original work from the MCRD.

  • M. Sc. (Biochemistry)

    Biochemistry is the study of the chemical processes in living organisms. It is a science concerned with the chemical constituents of living cells and the reactions and processes they undergo. The main objective of biochemistry is the complete understanding at the molecular level of all the chemical processes that maintain life.  Biochemistry encompasses large areas of cell biology, molecular biology and molecular genetics. Knowledge of biochemistry is essential to all life sciences. Biochemistry and medicine are intimately related. Health depends on the harmonious balance of the biochemical reactions occurring in the body and disease reflects abnormalities of biochemical reactions or processes. A sound knowledge of biochemistry is necessary in understanding the concepts of molecular genetics. With the advances made in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, the relevance of biochemistry has increased many folds.     - BSc with 55% aggregate marks in Biological Sciences viz. Biochemistry, Zoology, Botany, Biophysics, Biotechnology and Microbiology or Chemistry at the graduate level, recognized by M.G.University.

  • M. Sc. (Bioinformatics)

    Bioinformatics is a relatively nascent field representing the combined power of all the pure sciences and the cutting edge of Information Technology. A very dynamic field, it is proving to be a boon for the research community and the layman alike.

    Duration:- 2 years

    BSc with Biochemistry, Biophysics, Zoology, Biotechnology, Botany/Plant Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Computer Application (BCA), Electronics, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Microbiology, Physics and Statistics with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks from any university recognized by MG University.

  • M. Sc. (Food Science and Technology)

    This course impart specialized training to students; to take up careers in Food processing industries, Research institutions, Quality assurance & inspection agencies. Through this course the students are expected to gain a comprehensive understanding of characteristics of food, manufacture, quality assurance, packaging etc

    Duration:- 2 years

    Eligibility:- BSc with Food Science, Food Technology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Home science or nutrition as one of the subjects in their curriculum with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks of any University recognized by M. G. University.

  • M. Sc. (Phytomedical Science & Technology)

    The post graduate course in Phytomedical Science and Technology is aimed at developing qualified human resource for research and development and sustainable management of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) for a holistic and integrated healthcare system, apart from contributing to the sectors of natural dyes and health tourism. While pharmaceutical industry covering all medicare systems (both modern and traditional) will be the main beneficiary, there are a number of other sectors, industrial, agricultural, environmental and educational among others, which will get immense professional benefit from the course. In providing quality materials, a cycle of events starting from exploration and cultivation of MAPs to product development, quality control and trade are involved which will be of interest to a spectrum of organizations both in India and abroad leading to generation of jobs and occupational opportunities. It is further given thrust by the international stipulations of the WTO regime regarding quality certification of trade and commerce.

    Duration:- 2 years

    - B.Sc degree in biological science (Botany, Applied Botany, Biochemistry, Zoology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Agriculture) or an equivalent degree, B.Sc Chemistry or MBBS, BAMS, BHMS, BSMS, B.Pham degree recognized by the M.G. University, Kottayam.

  • M. Sc. (Plant Biotechnology)

    This program is aimed at professionals to suit the needs of both industrial and R&D sectors which include Plant Biotech companies, Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering institutes, horticultural firms, biopharmaceuticals, biofertilizers, biopesticides, plant breeding and crop development, agroforestry and green house management.

    Duration:- 2 years

    Eligibility:- B.Sc degree with Botany as main or subsidiary subject, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Agriculture Science and Environmental Science with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks at the graduate level, recognized by MG University.

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)

    MACFAST MBA programme offers seats for 120 students. MBA is designed as a 2-year, 4-semester, postgraduate programme with the objective of moulding and transforming young graduate students for value driven, competent and committed professional roles.

    Eligibility Criteria :-

    A pass in any Bachelors degree examination recognised by the Mahatma Gandhi University securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate, i. e. in all parts of examination, for Arts and Commerce degrees, and 55% for all other degrees (Sciences / Engineering degrees) or 50% marks in any Master degree examination. The applicants belonging to the SC/ST/OEC communities who fall short of the required minimum % of marks by not more than 5% mark shall also be eligible for admission. Final year degree students may also apply.


    Selection will be based on MAT Score (70%) followed by  Group Discussion (15%) and Personnel Interview (15%)

  • Master of Computer Application (M.C.A.)

    MACFAST MCA program is a three year course in the semester system, approved by AICTE and affiliated to MG University. The Department offers place for 60 students in each batch. The objective of the course is to produce professionally competent computer postgraduates.

    Eligibility Criteria:-

    Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks for degree examinations recognized by Mahatma Gandhi University with Mathematics, Computer Science or Statistics as one of the subjects are eligible to apply. The marks obtained for languages will not be counted. Those who have availed of more than three chances at the qualifying examinations will not be eligible to apply. Final year degree students may also apply.


    A degree with minimum 55% aggregate marks for Mathematics, Computer Science or Statistics as one of the subjects. Selection will be from the Entrance Exam conducted by the Directorate of Technical Examination (DTE).
