There is always an inbuilt tendency in individuals to blame an establishment for lapses and lags. One such institution that continues to bear the brunt for good, bad and even reasons is the Indian Railways. Seldom is a thought spared that the Railways of India with its mammoth network that runs across like veins through the country is a source of livelihood for many. It is one of the largest civilian employers in the world with its annual railway recruitment. On an average as many as 1.5 million Indians are placed in various departments of the railways and this is no mean task.
Career in Indian railways- A career in India Railways is both secure and at the same time thoroughly rewarding for entire pool of aspirants. be it professionals, skilled personnel and even those who are unemployed. However the most important factor is that this department is completely recession proof and provides the highest levels of opportunities for deserving individuals.
Divisions in Railways- For convenience in administration the railways been divided into four main railheads and further subdivided into 17 different zones which is headed by a general manager. Each department is under the purview of the Ministry of Railways.
The two main division of the railway include technical and the non technical department.

· Technical Department- The technical department of the railway consists of civil, mechanical, electrical ,telecommunications , which consist of engineers and professionals
· Non technical department- The non technical department of the railways consists of General Services which includes the Accounts Department, Personnel Management, Security and Railway Protection Force (RPF).
Apart from that the railways is divided into four main departments
Group A and Group B- Group A consist officers recruited under UPSC. UPSC conducts recruitments for the following services Indian Railway Accounts Services (IRAS) and Indian Railway traffic Service (IRTS). Apart from that the other service that constitutes this grade include Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE) Indian Railway of Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Service Stores (IRSS). The recruitments for engineering posts are done through Combined Engineering Service Examination. There are no special examinations or test conducted for group B. Most of the candidates in the group B are promoted to Group C.
Group C and Group D- Recruitments of employee for Group C and Group D are done through Railway Recruitment Board (RRB). There are 19 RRB’s in the country that conducts placements in Group C and D railway posts
This year’s Railway recruitment 2013 is eagerly awaited on the back of the promise that close to 1.4 million candidates would be placed in the first phase. This is certainly not going to make the process easier but it is aimed at facilitating deserving candidates.
