About the College

The Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, established as Civil Engineering College, Calcutta, way back in 1856 and is one of the oldest and Premier engineering university in India.  The University was known as Calcutta Civil Engineering College on and from 24th November, 1856, when there were only 10 students and a few instructive staff. From 12th February, 1920 the name was changed to B.E. College Shibpur. The university was ranked 10th among all engineering institutes in India by the magazine "India Today" in 2005. The university is set to become the first Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology following the Indian Cabinet's approval of the proposal for its upgrade to IIEST on 12 October 2010. The university also conducts several Masters level courses in technical disciplines. PhD programs are also offered. All courses offered by the university have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). This 149 year old Institution, the second oldest of its kind in India and a paradise of a place, with Deodar & Palm fringed roads,crystal clear Pools and emerald green playgrounds invites a journey into its sanctum sanctorum . The university has entered into international collaboration with the University of Windsor in Canada, Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland, and the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
