About Graduate Mechanical Engineer Course
Here are the details of Graduate Mechanical Engineer Course including duration, Eligibility, Admission Criteria, Fees and Syllabus.
This 12 months course is offered to existing Graduates in Mechanical Engineering who wants to change their career path to marine Engineering .
The course is duly approved by the Directorate General of Shipping. The syllabi comprises of subject related to Marine engines and extensive workshop practices.
Consequent to the course and on completion of the mandatory short courses one becomes eligible to take up a career at sea as a junior / trainee engineer. A minimum of 8 months of sea service is then required to be put in on board merchant vessels on completion of which the junior / trainee engineers become eligible to write Class IV Part ‘B’ examination (Class IV Part ‘A’ examination, being exempted on the strength of the Degree awarded). Thereafter a Class IV Certificate of Competency is awarded by the Mercantile Marine Department, Government of India. Subsequently, they become full fledged Engineer officers of Merchant Marine and are free to take up lucrative careers within the Shipping industry world-wide.

Eligibility :
BE or B.Tech (Mechanical or Naval Arch) from AICTE approved college/university with minimum 60% marks and at least 50% in English in either 10th or 10+2.. Must be fluent in written and spoken English.
Age :
Not exceeding 28 years on the date of commencement of training.
Medical Fitness :
Medically fit with eyesight 6/6, with or without external aids. Maximum power permitted ± 2.5. No colour blindness. All candidates have to pass complete medical examination and mandatory tests prior to joining IMI. IMI has a panel of qualified doctors and professional laboratories specialising in Merchant Navy regulations and requirements as per ILO Convention 147 Seafarer’s Medical Examination.
Selection Procedure :
IMI undertakes Aptitude, IQ, Reasoning and Psychometric tests followed by an interview. Direct sponsorship by shipping companies is also accepted.

dear u can undergo GEC course to get converted to marine engineer. The GEC course is for the duration of around 15 months and the entire training is completed in 3 phases as under: Phase 1: 5 months Pre-Sea training at Academy in Bangkok Phase 2: 8 months Sea training on board Ship. (You shall be paid a stipend of around USD 200 – 400 per month depending on the Ship. (The Institute assures 100/% Placements for sea training on board ships which is a pre - requisite to get the job with the Shipping Companies.) The minimum eligibility for courses in nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no color blindness.
Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field.

COC3 course at IIMS ,Karnataka after 10+2 provides you with the stipend paid on board ship training paying 20000-25000 / month. after which students get placed at salaries ranging from Rs. 1.5- 2 lacs a month. Time period of course is 2 years( approx.) including 12-18 months of stipend paid training.Students of PCM / Commerce with Maths are eligible for one module whereas students of all three streams ARTS/SCIENCE/COMMERCE are eligible for another module
