About M.Sc Economics Course

M.Sc Economics provides courses in basic science, engineering and computational methods in the first year making the students efficient in developing verbal and quantitative abilities with a scientific approach. Thereafter, the students are given a thorough and intense exposure to economic theory, analytical tools, mathematical techniques and applied econometric models with adequate stress on the interpretations of results along with their socio-economic implications. Hence, the course structure differs from other (Bachelor of Arts) economic programs offered at other Universities in India.

Moreover, the new breed of economists graduating after the completion of this program are expected to be in high demand in industry, institutions of higher learning and research, both in India and abroad, in this highly globalized world of today. Especially in the context of the economic downturn that is still fresh in our minds, the role of such economists becomes all the more important.

Admission on M SC. Economics:-

The students get admission to this program by virtue of having cleared the IIT-JEE exam. The duration of the program is 5 years. After the completion of the course, the students get degree in B.Sc. (Honours) and M.Sc. in Economics.

After covering basic science and engineering courses in the first year, they are exposed to rigorous theories in Economics and allied subjects from the second year onwards. Here a very brief overview of the courses that the students are obliged to take is presented.

The idea of iit undertaking non technical stream was vauge to many, yet the MSc economics prvides an technical as well as business oriented traning to its students, The program provides courses in basic science, engineering and computational methods in the first year making the students efficient in developing verbal and quantitative abilities with a scientific approach. 


About the College

Department of Humanities and Social Sciences with the very inception of IIT Kharagpur in 1951. Its objective was to provide value-based liberal education to budding scientists and engineers so that they can become professionals with a difference to understand the social realities.

Now the Department houses many disciplines. They are English literature and communication, Economics, German, Philosophy, Psychology, Human resource management, and Sociology. The Department is actively engaged in teaching, research, training, outreach activities, and runs its own master programmes.
