IISER Kolkata Courses Offered

2-Year MS 2-Year MS

Applications are invited from B. Tech students (Electrical, Mechanical, and Metallurgical Engineering streams) to apply for a two-year MS. programme (by thesis), in the interdisciplinary areas of Material Science, Non-Linear phenomena, and Nano systems. Interested candidates may send their details (bio-data etc.) in the prescribed format to the Academic Coordinator.

5 years Integrated B.S - M. S 5 years Integrated B.S - M. S

A complete education in the basic sciences as well as advanced knowledge in a major subject area supplemented by cutting-edge research experience. Students will be continuously evaluated instead of the conventional single exam evaluation.
       
Syllabus-5yr B.S - M.S.
       

  • In the first two years, there are comprehensive core courses in all areas of basic sciences, viz., mathematical, chemical, physical, biological, and earth sciences. In addition to this, there are also courses on allied topics such as space & astrophyscial sciences, computational sciences, electronics and instrumentation, humanities & scocial sciences.
  • In the third and fourth years, students have to choose a major subject from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Earth Science, and may also take optional interdisciplinary courses, e.g., engineering sciences and humanities / social sciences.
  • The fifth year is completely devoted to full time research/technical project/specialized training in which the students will have to write a dissertation.
  • At the end of the fifth year a B.S - M.S dual degree will be awarded by IISER-Kolkata.


Eligibility   (For 2011 Admission)

1. Passed 10+2 or its equivalent examination in 2010 or appearing in 2011.
2. Also candidates satisfying at least one of the following three criteria may apply:    
   
(i) Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojna (KVPY)
   
Kishore Vaigyanic Protsahan Yojna (KVPY) SX, SB, SA and SP streams. (http://www.iisc.ernet.in/kvpy)
   
(ii) IIT JEE - 2011:-
   
Students obtaining a minimum of 60% marks in Class XII and securing a rank in the regular merit list.
   
(iii) State / Central Board (DIRECT ADMISSION):-
   
Students with high aggregate scores in board examinations (X and XII) in science stream. and IISER science aptitude test. The State/Central Boards must be recognized by the MHRD.

Who can Apply

Students with a B. Sc/B.E/B.Tech/M.B.B.S degree from any recognized university/institute/ college can apply for the Integrated Ph. D programme in Biological, Chemical, Earth, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.  Candidates need to secure a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades in their qualifying examinations. Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% in aggregate, based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held so far.

Mode of Selection:-


Institute-level committee(s) will scrutinize all the applications, and prepare a shortlist of about 100 candidates, who may be called for written test/interview. The Institute will finally declare the list of selected candidates on the Institute website.
       

Student Intake:-

In the Academic Session 2011-12 a total of 40 students may be selected, covering all sciences.

Ph.D  Programme Ph.D Programme

Eligibility:-
   
The qualification for the Ph.D. programme is Masters degree from any recognized University/Institute or its equivalent. Final year Masters students who are yet to obtain their degree may also appear in the admission procedure. At the time of admission only candidates with a M.Sc. degree or equivalent degree with at least 55% marks in the subject concerned will be considered. However, for candidates awaiting their results, provisional admission with special permission of the Director may be allowed. Only candidates who have qualified in the UGC/CSIR NET JRF or have other equivalent fellowship like DBT, ICMR, INSPIRE, NBHM and ICAR etc are eligible to apply. 

Selection procedure:- List of shortlisted candidates (based on merit, subject specialization and required research area) for Test/Interview will be published in the IISER-Kolkata website tentatively on May 15, 2011. The test/interview will be held tentatively on 7th and 8th June, 2011. The selected candidates will receive the offer letter containing also the last date for joining shortly after the interview.

Ans : yes you can do engineering but from a private engineering college where there is no age barrier as some colleges might have an age limit for admission into the course.
