Govind Ballabh Pant Social Science Institute was established in 1980 as one in the network of Social Science Research Institutes. The main areas of research at the Institute include development planning and policy, environment, health and population, human development, rural development and management, culture, power and change, democracy and institutions.

The Institute has a doctoral programme in social sciences and a MBA Rural Development Programme. In both programmes the degree is awarded by the University of Allahabad and approved by AICTE, New Dellhi.

  • MBA

    MBA-Rural Development course has been widely recognized for its excellence, prepares students to become Development Managers. Students coming out of the programme have found jobs in the Informal and Formal sectors engaged in working in rural areas.

    Duration:- 2 years

    Eligibility:- Graduation in any discipline.

    Admission Criteria:- The admission to the MBARD courses shall be based on Admission Test comprising Written and Oral Tests. Based on performance in the Written Test, shortlisted candidates shall be required to appear in Oral Test conducted for MBARD programme. The number of shortlisted candidates for the Oral Tests shall be decided by the Admission Committee. All tests shall be conducted only in English medium.

  • Ph.D

    Economics, Commerce, Education, Management, Business Administration, Psychology, Political Science, Public Administration, Sociology, Social Work, and Social Anthropology


        Postgraduates in Social Science discipline with at least 55% marks.

        The candidate should have cleared National Eligibility Test (NET) for JRF /Lecturership or completed M. Phil. or should have two years research experience (a certificate to this effect to be attached from the concerned authority) or have at least two articles (reprints to be attached) published in professional journals in Social Sciences.

        For Institutional Fellowships. the candidate whether registered or not may apply. They will have to be registered / re-registered as the case may be with one of the faculty members of the respective institutes.


    The upper age limit for a doctoral fellow is below 35 years (relaxable by 5 years in case of SC or ST). In exceptional cases, where a candidate is found to have outstanding ability, the age limit may be relaxed marginally at the discretion of ICSSR.


    The selected candidate will be paid a fellowship amount of Rs.6,OOO/- per month for two years, extendable by one year in exceptional cases only, plus Rs.12,OOO/- per annum as contingency grant.

    In case of an employed scholar his/her salary is protected. In addition, a contingency grant of Rs.12,OOO/- per annum will also be paid. Duration of a salary protected fellowship will be for two years only.
