Information Security :
In today's information age and the highly competitive business environment, Information Security is a very critical factor. Organizations treat information as the most significant asset and ensure that this asset is protected from being leaked, crashed, hacked, copied or destroyed. The dynamic vulnerabilities associated with conducting business online is today a huge challenge to law enforcement authorities all over the world. Surveys of computer crimes and security lapses demonstrate the seriousness and complexity of Information Security. Figures reveal the extent of misuse of information and how important. It is for organizations to safeguard themselves against internal and external threats. With new threats surfacing almost every day, protecting one's network and critical information assets has become a continuous challenge. All over the world, Governments and Corporations have increased their spending on information security over the years and are looking for people who can administer the systems safely and securely. Recent research studies indicate that the need for information security professionals will increase manifold in the coming years. Job opportunities thus exist not only in IT and IT-enabled service businesses, but covers a wide spectrum of industries such as financial institutions, insurance companies, banks, research institutions, media and entertainment organizations, government as well as enforcement agencies. However, this is not matched by a corresponding supply of skilled IS professionals. Industry observers point out that the demand for IS professionals has made security as one of the most sought after and best-paid careers. This programme initiated by MIEL and ISCOM is a positive step towards fulfilling the requirement of this industry.
Demand for Information Security :
The need for IS professionals will exponentially increase in the coming years, as more overseas companies look to India to cater to their information processing needs. Unfortunately, this is not matched by a corresponding supply of skilled IS professionals. A recent NASSCOM report says that less than 10,000 professionals have a working knowledge of IS. At this rate there will be an expected shortfall of over 100,000 IS professionals globally, by the year 2008. There will be an expected shortfall of about 25,000-50,000 IS professionals in the US alone over the next few years. In India, less than 2,500 professionals have specific IS skills, which represents a minuscule 0.5 percent of the IT workforce.
