S S Institute of Medical Sciences& Research Centre (SSIMSRC) is situated right in the centre of Karnataka at a distance of 260 Km from Bangalore on the NH-4 ; Bangalore-Pune National Highway. It is located at 14°28' altitude and 75° 59' latitude with an elevation of 602.5mts above the mean sea level.
In the year 1997, Davangere was separated from Chitradurga district and made district head quarters consisting of six taluks viz., Davangere, Harihara, Honnali, Chennagiri, Jagalur and Harapanahalli. This city is an important educational, commercial and industrial centre. It was, once a well known centre for textile spinning and weaving mills, the "Manchester of Karnataka', but, today it is well on its way to be known as the Educational capital of South India; thanks to the far reaching vision of the Bapuji Educational Association.
Currently part of the central diagnostics facility of SSIMS&RC, the Department of Microbiology is well equipped with research microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, dark ground microscope, ultra centrifuge, laminar air flow and sterilizing equipment

The lack of any specialty hospitals in rural Davangere often had people going to Bangalore and Belgaum seeking special treatment. Also the NH4 passing by Davangere was the site of many traffic accidents, necessitating immediate medical care. SSIMS&R was set up with the vision of being a Stage 4 referral hospital, and a Central Regional Hospital that takes care of the medical needs of the geographical area
