Description
The recent years saw several new initiatives being taken by the institute. This includes launch of Doctoral Program in collaboration with Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur (BESUS), Kolkata, start of the 2-year new program on Biotechnology Business Management, launch of 1-year program on Social Enterprise Management targeted at the NGO sector, spreading the Executive-MBA program across a new centre at Sion. The institute has also established four Centres of Excellence: Banking & Finance, Ethics & Values, Pharmaceutical Management, and Entrepreneurship.
The other new experimentation is in context of building research focus at the institute. Knowledge creation and dissemination is the business in which business schools are expected to be in. Research therefore becomes an imperative for schools to build sustainable competitive advantage. We at SIESCOMS strongly believe that it is research and creation of new knowledge that can be an important differentiator. We have thus decided to spend considerable time in this activity both by students and faculty. Research has been integrated in the course curriculum of MBA and students in collaboration with faculty are expected to come out with working papers. This concept is also known as “Idea research Initiative”. Hope this experimentation will be a path-breaking one in the landscape of Indian management education.
With a view to bring in increasing social sensitivity among MBA students, as an experimentation, first year students were encouraged to undertake summer internship with an NGO. Though this was optional, there was substantial enthusiasm with around 10 students opting for it. This may be considered a good beginning. The institute has also started a compulsory course on “NGO Management” for all first year MBA students.
With Indian economy maturing and getting increasingly professional, role of business schools is becoming progressively complex. In days to come there will be need for specialized managers with perspective to work in volatile environment. The course content and delivery mechanism is being modified to meet emerging challenges subjects being taught through increased involvement of students and simulation techniques. Emphasis is paid towards building decision making and analytical skills of students. Holistic personality development of students is the other area of attention.
The Institute indeed grateful for active participation by several corporates in our various initiatives. We are also thankful to management, members of Academic Advisory Council and Board of Studies who have always provided required impetus and patronage.
