Description

The Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) is an institute of basic scientific research located in Kolkata (Calcutta). The Institute was founded in 1950 by Professor Meghnad Saha as a part of University of Calcutta. At that time, it was called the "Institute of Nuclear Physics", with Professor Meghnad Saha the founding director. In the beginning, research was mainly directed towards Nuclear Physics, which was an emerging field at that time and also Biophysical Sciences. After Meghnad Saha's death in 1956, the Institute was renamed to commemmorate its founder.

  • M.Sc (Associationship Course in Physics & Biophysics Science)

The Post M.Sc. Teaching Programme, run by faculty members, is coordinated by the Teaching Section along with two Committees:

Teaching Committee in Physics (Chairman : Prof Palash Baran Pal, Head, Teaching Section, ex officio; Convenor: Prof M S Janaki) and

Teaching Committee in Biophysical Sciences (Prof-In-Charge: Prof Samita Basu)

The Post-M.Sc. Associateship Course in Physics was launched in 1953 at Professor M N Saha's initiative. The purpose then was to train bright and strongly motivated young students with a Master's Degree in Physics from Indian Universities for high quality education and research in Nuclear Science.

The scope of the Course was later widened to embrace other areas of physical sciences. The duration of the Course, 9 months in the beginning, was soon extended to a full year.

In 1973 a similar course was also introduced in Biophysical Sciences.

An identical course in Radiological Physics, launched in 1988, ran only for three years before being abandoned.

Since the 1993-94 Session the Post-M.Sc. Associateship Course has become an integral part of the Ph. D. Programme of the institute.

The Courses in the two streams (Ph/Bio) equip students for the Ph.D. Programme through classroom lectures at basic and advanced levels, laboratory sessions and exposure to computers.

Those admitted into the Course are designated as Junior Research Fellows (JRF) of the Institute and enjoy stipends of Rs 12,000/- per month for the first two years and Rs 14,000/- per month thereafter. Personal medical reimbursements are also available according to the CS(MA) Rules. House Rent Allowance (HRA) is given at 30% of fellowship extra if hostel accommodation is not needed, or not available. An annual book grant of Rs. 3000/- is also available after the first year.

Successful completion of the Course leads to the award of a Diploma called "Associate of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics" and qualifies a student for joining a research group in the Institute.
