Description

The spread of European education in alliance with the doctrine of Christianity had been an important impetus to missionary enterprise in India in the nineteenth century. Scottish Church College, established in 1830 as the General Assemblies Institution and given its present name in 1929 ia an institution born out of one such impetus.

The college founder, Rev. Alexander Duff, was the first missionary to India from the Church of Scotland. His idea was to set up an institution which linked western education with Christian mission and the eventual progress of the people -- years later the College is committed to the vision of its founding father and aims at academic excellence alongwith social awareness and character building.

The College is the second oldest in North Calcutta and has produced numerous outstanding people, chief among them being Swami Vivekananda and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.

The College has been awarded Grade A by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college also enjoys the status of College with Potential for Excellence, a quality rating by the University Grants Commission. Media survey rates Scottish as one among the top fifty colleges in India.

The College is now owned and administered by the Church of North India (CNI) through the diocese of Calcutta. It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta but enjoys autonomous status for its Faculty of Post Graduate Studies.

We offer Honours course in 15 subjects in the under-graduate stream and post-graduate course in two subjects. The Department of Teacher Education of the college prepares women students for the Bachelor of Education degree.

In keeping with the vision of its founder, the Scottish Church College encouraged academic excellence as well as promoting personality development, community service and the refinement of aesthetic sensibilities. Through the years a long line of illustrious personalities have been educated in these hallowed halls of learning. The splendorous architecture of the College including its magnificent prayer hall is eloquent testimony to its timeless heritage and the pioneering vision of its founding fathers.

  • Scottish Church College, with its 160 years old heritage impeccable record as an academic institution of Kolkata needs no introduction. What stood out was its teacher student relationship. Sadly, the situation is no longer so, it seems. Let everyone know about the inside story of the chemistry department of this highly applauded college. What happened on 11th March, 2011 beggars description. All on a sudden, without any prior notice, the Vice Principal announced that the guardians of chemistry students who could not qualify for the selection test for part 2 were summoned by him to swallow a lot of harsh comments. The number of these students is about 30 out of 53 For ur kind information, in this department 37 students passed with above 60% in part 1, just a few months ago. Surely there is a disease while such a high number of students stopped studying after coming out with flying colours in part 1. The authority should call the HoD and to ask for explanation. What can guardians do? Now, come to the point. Being a casual examinee in selection Test is a practice of students for years. Inspite of this result, which remains unpublished for years, the students score their bests in university exams. This year, this casuality went higher due to the present HoD Dr Dinabandhu Kundu, renowned organic chemistry author of ‘Chhaya Prokashoni’. Directly & indirectly he geared up the students to appear in this exam more insincerely, telling that the result would not be a matter at all like other years. Actually students took him as a more liberal. But, what happened just opposite to it. He forced the professors to get the result out & took a firm decision to Vice principal that, the below 35%’s would not be forgiven What kind of nasty cheating is this? If he wants to a strict HoD unlike others, he must announce it clearly that what is going to be. Concealing his true intentions beneath the musk of a student friendly professor, he showed his true face while it was proved that he had stealthily tightened the screw on the part 1 rankers. He rather started a barbaric practice misusing the power of his seat. No guardians were thanked after the record results of part 1. From admission to registration everything in college is done by the students. But in this case, authority has been suddenly awoken to be stern. More over, without making any awareness….. Is it not a brutalism? There’s another story. Each student below 75% attendance is forced to give fine 100/- with clear violation of university rule. Dinabandhu Kundu took the attendances of chemistry students by considering only the attendances of theory classes & not practical ones. The logic clearly states that the attendance of practical classes must have to be added while calculating the total percentage. But, the attitude of the chemistry department is: “who cares?” If this is how a prestigious department of a premier institution with a glorious history behaves the college may turn out to be history & nothing more Posted by : Dara Singh, on 18-03-2011 Report Abuse
