Description
TNMC was opened during the heady days of the independence movement in 1921 and was appropriately named as National Medical College. Through a donation by Mr. M.N. Desai Topiwala the college was upgraded in 1946 and then received recognition for the MBBS course. It was then taken over by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and since then the progress graph of the college has been going up and steady.
Today, with the infrastructure of the 1300 bedded BYL Nair Charitable Hospital behind it, TNMC makes an ideal breeding ground for budding medicos of the 21st century. It provides training courses in more than 25 different medical and allied branches, including 9 superspeciality courses.
The college, with an annual budget of 7 crores, has more than 250 senior teaching staff members who are assisted by 400 resident doctors.
The BYL Nair Charitable Hospital & TN Medical College are twin institutes that have thrived together on a typical blend of education and service. Nair Hospital is a 1300 bedded multispeciality tertiary care centre with an annual budget of 33 crores that is provided by the Brihanmumbai Mahanagarpalika.
Nair Hospital is located in the centre of the main city of Mumbai and predominantly caters to the health needs of the urban poor. However, substantial proportions of patients come to this hospital not only from distant suburbs of Mumbai but also from the towns and villages of India.
The hospital with its 250 odd senior staff members and 400 resident doctors (most of whom are postgraduate medical students) takes care of more than 1 million patients every year through its outpatient departments. The total number of admissions in a year exceeds 37000.
In this setting of rich clinical material, with its teaching and research infrastructure Nair Hospital provides an ideal opportunity to enthusiastic medical students for expanding their knowledge and acquiring skills that are difficult to learn elsewhere. However, at Nair, this quest for knowledge is not an end in itself; but is fuelled by a wish to alleviate the sufferings of patients whom we feel priviledged to serve.
