About Long Island University-C W Post Campus
Long Island University was chartered by the New York State Education Department in 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, as a nonsectarian, coeducational, privately supported university established to provide “effective and moderately priced education” to people from “all walks of life.” From its beginning, admission to the University has been based solely on merit and promise. Large numbers of immigrants and children of immigrants have enrolled at Long Island University in their quest to achieve the American dream. Today, more than 11,300 students* study, learn and grow at the original campus, located in the heart of thriving downtown Brooklyn.

The College of Pharmacy, the oldest unit of Long Island University, now named the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, was established as the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1886. It became affiliated with the University in 1929 and merged with the Brooklyn Campus in 1976. One of the largest private colleges of pharmacy in the country, it is a doctoral degree-granting unit with a strong emphasis on training hospital and community pharmacists.

In 1947, recognizing the educational needs of the growing number of families moving to the suburbs, the University purchased the estate of Mrs. Joseph E. Davies, better known as Marjorie Merriweather Post. The C.W. Post Campus was originally conceived to be a small liberal arts and sciences college. Today, this 307-acre, doctoral degree-granting campus is home to nearly 10,600 students.**

From 1963 to 2005, the University also taught students at a third residential campus, located in Southampton, which was distinguished by its outstanding programs in marine science and the arts. For cost reasons, it proved necessary to consolidate undergraduate offerings at C.W. Post, and to transfer the registration of the marine science programs and to sell the campus to the State University of New York at Stony Brook. WLIU 88.3 F.M., the flagship station of the Long Island University Public Radio Network, continues to broadcast from the campus.

Long Island University has four non-residential campuses, primarily offering graduate degrees, located in Purchase (Westchester), Orangeburg (Rockland), and Brentwood and Riverhead (both in Suffolk County). Global College, which originally was founded as Friends World College in 1965 by the Society of Friends, is based at the Brooklyn Campus and operates overseas centers in China, Japan, Costa Rica, India and South Africa.

The phrase “Access and Excellence” embodies the University’s mission to inculcate a passion for learning and a willingness to explore new ideas in people from every socioeconomic background and from every corner of the globe. From modest beginnings with its first class of 312 students, the University’s enrollment has grown to 24,480 students. These men and women receive a superb education from over 650 full-time faculty members in fields ranging from education and the arts to health sciences, pharmacy, business and public service. Upon graduation, they go on to enjoy highly successful careers and join a growing community of more than 167,000 Long Island University living alumni.
