The Medical Council of India monitors and allows MBBS courses in India. There continues to an explicit doubt about the duration of these courses.The recent news suggesting that there was a plan to extend the program duration to six and a half years has only added more speculation. At present the duration of this professional course is five and half years (with classroom learning of four and half years and with one year of compulsory rotating internship). The present professional program structure focuses on pre clinical, para-clinical and  medical specialization. Since 2013, UG NEET has been accepted as national level eligibility admission to various medical courses.
