The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) also known as National Open School (NOS) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development(MHRD), Government of India.

NIOS has Regional Centre in Noida, Hyderabad, Vishakhapatnam, Guwahati, Pune, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Patna, Kochi, Jaipur, Bhopal, Allahabad, Dehradun, Gandhi Nagar and Bangalore.

NIOS offers 86 Vocational Education programmes in different areas such as agriculture, business, commerce, engineering,  technology, health and Paramedical, Home Science and Hospitality Management, Teacher Training, Computer and IT related sectors. In addition to this NIOS Life Enrichment Programmes and General Services. Knowledge, skills and qualities of entrepreneurship.

NIOS Courses / Programs:-

Secondary Course:-

This Course is equivalent to the Xth standard. You will be required to successfully complete a minimum of five subjects with atleast one language or atmost two languages, which is compulsory for certification.

Senior Secondary Course:-

This Course is designed for those who have passed the Xth standard or equivalent examination from a recognised Board and would like to continue their education towards a Senior Secondary Certification, equivalent to XII standard.

Open Basic Education (OBE) Programme providing a elementary education at three levels, for school drop-outs and neo-literates, out of school learners through Accredited Agencies.

The clientele for Open Basic Education (OBE) programme is:

- Children below 14 years of age
- Adults above 14 years of age

The OBE Programme is offered at three levels:

OBE level A : equivalent to class I-III
OBE level B : equivalent to class IV-V
OBE level C : equivalent to class VI-VIII

NIOS 2014 Admission:-

Examination in October 2014

Secondary (Class X) (Stream I, Block II)

Date of Admission:- Up to 28.02.2014 (without late fee)

Eligibility Criteria:- 14 years as on 31st Jan 2014

Class VIII passed or self Certificate (as prescribed in the admission form)


Senior Secondary (Class XII) (Stream I, Block II)

Date of Admission: - Up to 15.03.2014 (with late fee of Rs 200/-)

Eligibility Criteria: - 15 years as on 31st Jan 2014

Secondary (Class Xth) passed from recognized board
