The Central University of Orissa has been established by the Parliament under the Central Universities Act, 2009 . It is one of the 15 new Central Universities established by the Government of India during the UGC XI Plan.

Central University of Orissa offer M.A Programe in English, Oriya, Anthropology & Tribal Studies, Sociology, Journalism and Mass Communication, Economics, Education Technology & M.Sc Programe in Mathematics, Nursing, Public Health and Community Health courses. The selection is made strictly on the basis of merit at the entrance examination.

The University has separate hostel for boys & girls, well stocked library with the collection of 9,000 volumes of textbooks, well equipped computer lab with connectivity through BSNL broad-band services.
