National Institute of Technology Silchar was stablished in 1967 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), Silchar. The college was transformed into National Institute of Technology in the year 2002, and bestowed with the status of Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development.

NIT Silchar is situated on a sprawling campus spread over 600 acres {2.43 km2} of land on the outskirts of Silchar amid breathtaking scenery. It is surrounded by beautiful lakes and hillocks. The Institute has well equipped Computer Service Centre with Internet Access facility through a 2-MBPS leased line circuit, well equipped Workshops, The Institute has a playground measuring 150m X 90m with facility for playing football, Cricket, Hockey, and other games.
